A legal framework has historically been set by the European Union to respond to the specific desire of its citizens for privacy, while at the same time ensuring security over the continent. With the development of invasive social networks, in the light of PRISM and with new legal bases to protect human rights, this framework has been challenged and needs changing. Besides, the reform of the internet governance will impact for a long time the way the network is organized.
Action: We wrote to the European Commission, asking them to take into account the question of data protection when negociating about ICANN, the global internet regulatory body. In particular, ICANN should comply with the EU legal framework regarding personal data retention. Read the full letter here
